Parzival grows from naive boy to Knight of the Round Table in his quest for the Holy Grail. My version was the Oxford World’s Classics translation by Cyril Edwards, published by OUP.
Thoughts :
More of a placeholder than a review, I’m afraid. I wrestled with this one for three weeks, giving up twice and only managing to get through the first third of the volume before finally calling time.
Don’t get me wrong – some of my best friends are medieval German poets AND Knights of the Table Round, but the honest truth is I found the doings of Parzival rendered both dull and instantly forgettable. When the most exciting thing in 120 pages is the appearance of The Grail which is content to sit on the mantlepiece and oversee dinner, then liveliness and entertainment are in short supply.
Let’s move on shall we?
